Some facts about Cranleigh
Until the mid-1860's, Cranleigh was
called 'Cranley'. The Post Office at the time insisted on
changing the spelling to avoid any potential for confusion with
nearby Crawley in West Sussex.
The original name for the village
is believed to come from the large crane breeding ground that was
historically located nearby. The figure of a crane continues
to adorn the old drinking water fountain that can be found in
Fountain Square in the centre of the village.
Cranleigh possessed the first
cottage hospital in the country founded by a local doctor in
1859.
